Motorcyclist involved in death of 1-year-old placed on station bail

The motorcyclist responsible for the death of one-year-old Neshia Alexander of Kariako Village, Barama River, North West District (NWD), was arrested, but later placed on station bail.
The accident, which occurred on August 27 at Kariako Village, also left the now dead toddler’s 13-year-old sister injured.
Regional Police Commander, Senior Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan told Guyana Times that a team of Police ranks travelled to the area and conducted a thorough investigation thus leading to the arrest of the motorcyclist.
He added that the suspect was placed on bail pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the way forward.
It was reported that on August 26 about 19:30h, the toddler was holding her 13-year-old sister’s hand while standing on the roadway at Kariako Village when the motorcycle, ridden by a 25-year-old man, crashed into them.
Police reports revealed, as a result of the impact, the child fell to the roadway with injuries to her head and body. The toddler was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to her home before being rushed to the Kumaka District Hospital for medical attention.
However, the child was pronounced dead on arrival at the health facility.
On Wednesday, an autopsy performed by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh gave the cause of death as multiple head injuries.
The child’s body was handed over to relatives for burial.
