A 47-year-old motorcyclist who was on his way home from work lost his life on Saturday morning at Craig, East Bank Demerara.
Dead is Dhanraj Budhram. He was struck by motor car PVV 8691, which sped away from the scene. Budhram was employed at Gafoor’s Complex located at Land of Canaan, EBD.
Reports are at about 12:20h on Saturday, Budhram was en route to his Belle West, Canal Polder Number Two home, when the accident occurred. Reports are that Budhram was on the northern lane in the vicinity of a turn at Craig, as the motor car was approaching from the southern side. While both the motorcyclist and the car’s driver were navigating the turn, the car ended up colliding with Budhram and knocked him off his motorcycle.
However, the 27-year-old driver did not stop to render any assistance but instead sped away from the scene. Another driver who witnessed the incident recorded the license plate of the car. He then rushed to aid the motorcyclist while the police were summoned to the scene. However, Budhram succumbed to his injuries before he could have received medical help. This publication understands that the 27-year-old driver of the motor car was said to be heading towards his Supply, EBD home when the accident occurred.
Some hours later he turned up at a police station accompanied by a lawyer.
A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver but there was no trace of alcohol.
He is in Police custody as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, Budhram’s wife, Nanda, when contacted by Guyana Times was at a loss for words about the details of her husband’s death. She stated that on Saturday morning she received a telephone call at about 12:45h from the police informing her that Budhram had died in an accident.
As the woman broke down in tears, she stated that she has five young children with her husband and that he was the sole breadwinner of their family. (Kristen Macklingam)
