“Mr Consistent” Jamual John aiming to extend cycling dominance at Ounce of Gold event
“Mr Consistent”, Jamual John, is fresh from a win on his return to cycling in Guyana, and is aiming to extend his dominance in the upcoming Ounce of Gold cycle race that is set for Sunday October 10, commencing outside the Thirst Park premises of Banks DIH at 07:30h.
Having dominated the first-ever Wilbert Benjamin Memorial Road Race in Berbice on Sunday last, John told Guyana Times Sport he is excited to participate in the Ounce of Gold race, which he described as one of his favourite races.
“I am looking forward to it 100%. They have a bunch of guys coming for me, so it will be great. I am going in the race with 85% fitness, but it should be a good race,” John explained.
Reflecting on his recent win in the Wilbert Benjamin Memorial Road Race, John, the man who represented Team Foundation in the United States of America in a five-month stint, said: “The race was good. I actually went in the race to train and see how I will feel coming into the heat. The heat played a big part. I had to do most of the work going up, because everyone was watching. A bunch of attack passed, but I did most of the chasing. At the turn back point, I kept on going. I attacked…and rode 35 miles by myself.”
Jamual John won the Benjamin Memorial Race, followed by Marcus Keiler (second), Paralympian Walter Grant-Stuart (third), Andre ‘Padlock’ Green (fourth), Alex Mendes (fifth), Paul DeNobrega (sixth), Christopher Griffith (seventh), and Kemuel Moses (eighth) in that order.
This Ounce of Gold race will see Guyana’s top riders battling from Thirst Park to Dora on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, and return to the point of origin for the finish. (Brandon Corlette)
