Murder accused recaptured after escaping from Lusignan Prison
…as ganja plant, wine, tattoo machine unearthed in raid
A 25-year-old murder accused was on Wednesday evening recaptured after escaping from the Lusignan Prison on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) early that morning.
Ishaka John, of Lot 109 A Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, who was on remand, was recaptured around 20:00h on the Railway Embankment at Mon Repos, the village after Lusignan when heading to Georgetown.
John had been observed on the fence by prison officers as he was making his escape.
This prompted the officers to fire several shots in his direction in an effort to deter and apprehend him, but this proved futile as he dodged the bullets and dashed to freedom.
It is unclear if the prisoner was injured in the process.
Contraband items
Meanwhile, also on Wednesday, ranks of the GPF and the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) seized a number of contraband items from the Lusignan Prison.
Among the items seized are a quantity of improvised weapons, a tattoo machine, eight containers of homemade wine, and a Guinness bottle.
Other items seized were a bag of sugar, 22 lighters, 15 cellular phones, seven phone batteries, a quantity of wires, a bottle of pepper, a screwdriver, and a vandalised landline phone.
A marijuana plant was also confiscated.
Just recently, two men — Donald Baird, 40, of Lot 22 Hardina Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, and Phillip Jhagroo, 46, of Lot B 3 Goed Intent, Leguan, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), who were wanted by the Police for armed robbery and murder ,escaped from the Lusignan Prison.
Reports are on the day in question, the two men escaped from the prison between 01:28h and 01:48h, but the Officer in Charge, Superintendent Alstan Scott reported them missing at 05:20h.
In a statement, Police said an improvised rope made of bedsheets was seen hanging from the southwestern corner of the prison fence which prompted a physical muster, where it was discovered that the prisoners were unaccounted for.
Following their escape, the GPF, along with prison officers, have been searching for the men, but they are yet to be found. Investigations are ongoing.
