Murder charge discharged against “Duck Man” for murder of ex-girlfriend
Thirty-five-year-old Devindra Ramdiah, who was charged in April 2018 with the killing of his ex-girlfriend, walked out of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday as a free man after the case was discharged against him owing to insufficient evidence.
Ramdiah, also known as “Duck man” was accused of killing 37-year-old Shawnette Savory on August 30, 2016, at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the woman’s murder was conducted by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
During the PI, the prosecution called several witnesses inclusive of Savory’s mother. However, the Magistrate found that there was insufficient evidence to commit Ramdiah to stand trial before a Judge and jury. As such, the charge was discharged.
Savory disappeared on August 28, 2016, after leaving her apartment at Prospect, EBD. Reports are she was last seen in the company of Ramdiah. Following the woman’s disappearance, Police had also issued wanted bulletins for her best friend and her husband. The couple’s home at Belle West, West Bank Demerara, was dug up as Police broke through the concrete floor of the one-bedroom shack after they were informed that Savory might have been buried there, however, nothing was found.
It was reported that Ramdiah had allegedly admitted to killing the woman and burying her body somewhere in Soesdyke. However, he allegedly took Police to the location, and they were unable to locate the body.
