Murder convict, B&E accused escape from Lusignan Prison

Ranks of the Guyana Police Force have launched an investigation into the escape of two inmates from the Lusignan Prison, East Coast of Demerara (ECD).

Prison authorities are yet to determine how the men made their escape. The men were discovered missing at about 07:30h on Tuesday during the unlocking of the prison’s quarantine section which was supervised by a duty officer and four other ranks.
The matter was reported to the Officer in Charge who immediately ordered a roll call, following which it was confirmed that two prisoners were missing.
Those who escaped are 26-year-old Andrew Chaung whose last address was New Road Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara. He was remanded for break and enter and larceny; and 24-year-old Shazam Kalil who was convicted for murder. He was serving a life sentence.
More than two months ago, Taje Singh, 45, who was serving a sentence for unlawful wounding and larceny of a water pump, had escaped from the Lusignan penitentiary by jumping a fence.
He was later found at a location in Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), some 12 hours after he had escaped.
