My thoughts on Govt’s performance so far

Dear Editor,
As it will soon be one year since the PPP/C Government took office, I write to you to express my thoughts on their performance from 2020 to date. I trust that you will permit me to do so.
Firstly, let me start by saying that without a doubt, the Government has shown commitment towards the development of Guyana. I believe that their efforts should be commended because even amidst challenges, they have managed to roll out major infrastructural works across the country whilst simultaneously dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. This, in addition to the fact that improvements are being made in other sectors like housing and water, and hinterland development shows that the Government is on the right path. I applaud the Government for what they have done so far in just one year in office.
I wish to draw attention to the agricultural sector in particular as I believe this is one of Guyana’s most important sectors. We have seen the Government reopen some of the Sugar Estates, creating hundreds of jobs for displaced workers. We have also seen them inject millions into reviving the sugar industry which will significantly benefit Guyana in the long run. However, the fact that the Government has focused on developing the sector as a whole is noteworthy in my opinion. For instance, the Government has established a $1.1 million coconut nursery at Kairuni on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, awarded a contract for a new $21 million lab for Rice Research Station and even began creating fish ponds in Region 6. In addition, they have also rolled out training programmes to boost agricultural production and established Community Development Councils in communities like Ithaca for the same purpose. These initiatives and projects would give the sector a significant boost, ultimately benefitting the country as a whole.
I thank the Government for all that they have done thus far for us Guyanese and urge everyone reading to do the same. Guyana will become a global powerhouse under the current leadership. I am confident of such.

Respectfully,
Erin Northe
