Police have launched an investigation into a mysterious fire, which engulfed a house in the Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice during the late hours of Sunday evening. No one was at home at the time of the blaze.
Guyana Times understands that the fire began in the bedroom of the one-storey concrete house around 22:30h. Reports indicated that persons nearby noticed the blaze and contacted the Fire Service.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that they heard an explosion from inside of the building which captured their attention and thus prompted awareness of the blaze.
The Guyana Fire Service was praised for its prompt response to the blaze. However, this newspaper was told that the house was damaged significantly on the inside, and the roof was burnt completely, leaving millions in losses.
Investigations into the fire are ongoing.
Only on Wednesday last, another fire at an unoccupied house in Diamond New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, had gutted the building, but mystery also surrounded that blaze as a female relative was reportedly informed by an unknown caller on the phone about the incident.
The family members had noted that they were unsure as to what could have caused the fire, and added that they never had electrical issues when they lived there. Similar to the Glasgow fire, neighbours who had gathered recalled hearing explosions coming from inside the house before the roof went up in flames. Additionally, a gas bottle which appeared to be leaking was seen lying in a trench in front of the home, moments after firefighters had contained the blaze.
