NA businesses donate to Howard scholarship awardee
Several business owners within the township of New Amsterdam, Region Six (East Berbice Corentyne) have joined together to assist a former Queen’s College student who was awarded a scholarship to Howard University.
Kayla Vanderstoop of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, was accepted into the Chemical Engineering programme at Howard University in Washington, DC.
The scholarship is worth US$19,000 which is a substantial difference from the US$47,000 annual school fee.
On Friday, businesses in the country’s oldest town pledged to support the 19-year-old Vanderstoop at a special reception hosted by New Amsterdam Mayor Winifred Haywood.
Those who contributed towards the young woman’s education were A Ally’s and Sons; Sheldon Contracting Firm; KT Fabrication and Construction; Danzie’s Fashion Center and Auto Sales; S and R Catering; Winifred Haywood; Carol Trim-Bagot; Haven Developmental Care and Trim Contracting.
Vanderstoop, who was accompanied by her father, Easn Vanderstoop, expressed her gratitude. She is expected to commence classes in August. (G4)
