New Amsterdam Kings were crowned the new champions of the Berbice zone Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Football which concluded on Sunday evening.
Playing at the New Amsterdam Stelling tarmac, Javon DeSantos 13th minute goal helped Kings defeat East Bank Gunners 1-0 in the riveting final and cop the coveted championship trophy and the $400,000 first place prize while the runner-ups received $150,000.
In the third place play-off between Mahaicony and Outsiders, the latter won 2-0 due to a Ryan October double. October etched his name on the score sheet in the 21st and 23rd minute to hand his hand his team $100,000 while Mahaicony had to settle for $75000. Meanwhile, in the semi-final matches, DeSantos once again was the difference between the two sides when he scored in the 22nd minute against Outsiders.
In the other match, the trio of Joseph Giddings, Ronaldo August and Andrew McCalman had successful conversions in the 1st, 5th and 23rd minutes respectively to seal a comprehensive win for Gunners over Mahaicony.
Having completed legs in Georgetown, West Demerara/East Bank Zone and now Berbice, the exciting tournament is expected to be featured on the East Coast of Demerara, and Linden next. The Bartica Zone is still in the pipeline since an official of the company explained that on previous occasions, the organizing body would coordinate the stated teams that play in the National Championships.
