NA M&TC washes roads amid spread of COVID-19

The Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam on Thursday commenced washing of the main access roads of the town amid the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus.
The project started with the washing of Main Street, New Amsterdam, and is expected to include Strand and Republic Road.
Mayor Winifred Haywood on Thursday said the exercise is a measure to reduce the spread of the virus, which has already claimed the life of one person in the town.

She noted that while persons are being asked to adhere to the concept of social distancing, washing of the town’s streets should add to the preventative measures being taken.
“We are washing it (the street) with soap powder and bleach,” she explained.
She expressed appreciation to the New Amsterdam Fire Service, the Police Force, the business community and the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) for their collaborative effort in making the project a reality.
“Our motive today was to ensure that we wash the three main roads. However, because it is a very time-consuming exercise, we are going to do Strand over the weekend, and after this is over, we are going to see our best how we can get it cleaned on a regular basis,” she explained.
This is the first time in decades that the streets of New Amsterdam are being washed.
