NAREI officer dies after vehicle turns turtle along Tacama Trail
A District Crop Extension Officer attached to the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) died on Tuesday after the vehicle in which he and others were travelling turned turtle along the Tacama Trail, Ituni, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
The dead man has been identified as Aaron Leitch.
Based on reports received, the accident involved a pick-up bearing registration number PAC 3958, owned by the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC).
At the time of the accident, the vehicle was being driven by a 50-year-old resident of Georgetown and was occupied by the now-dead man, Gregory Grenville,39, of Amelia’s Ward, Linden; Arafat Fazal, 37, a citizen of Bangladesh.
Police stated that the vehicle was proceeding along the Tacama trail at a fast rate and while negotiating a left bend, the driver lost control of the vehicle thus causing it to toppled several times before coming to a halt. As a result of the accident, all occupants, including the driver, sustained injuries.
They were picked up and transported to the Linden Hospital Complex where Leitch was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, Fazal was treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical attention. The driver and Grenville were treated and discharged.
The driver was subsequently detained as the investigation continued into the fatal accident.
