NATI students stabbed by classmate in row over bicycle

A student attached to the New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) was on Monday afternoon stabbed by his classmate during an argument over a bicycle.
The teen was identified as 17-year-old Nikeem Noble of Winkle Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

Reports are that Nobel, who rides to school, on two previous occasions found that after leaving his bicycle on the school’s premises, he returned only to find flat tyres. This happened again on Monday.
After doing his investigations, he found that it was a classmate who was responsible for the act.
He reportedly confronted his peer and an argument ensued which led to a scuffle. It was during the altercation that the suspect pulled out a sharp object from the waist of his pants and stabbed Noble once to his left side chest.
A teacher at the school intervened and Nobel was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

He remains a patient at the medical facility. The classmate was apprehended and handed over to the police. Officials at the school were reluctant to offer a comment when contacted by Guyana Times
In March of this year, a video showed three students being beaten with a belt by a fellow student at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute.
Back then, the Education Ministry had emphasised the need for the institute to be a place of non-violence and had recommended frequent assemblies at the institution and that sections of the rules and procedures be discussed at the assemblies.
Last month when asked what systems have since been put in place to prevent a reoccurrence, the acting Principal told the media that the school has been following the rules and regulations of the Ministry and they have put systems in place to prevent such instances.
The Education Ministry had also said the Institute should launch an anti-bullying campaign to ensure that students are sensitised on the negative effects of bullying and that the Institute is to be declared a “no-bullying” institution.
However, when the issue was raised with the school last month, the acting Principal did not say if those measures were implemented.
