National Assembly celebrates Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary

The National Assembly on Friday evening hosted a ceremony to reflect on Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

Dignitaries and the public were treated to a grand ceremony, filled with cultural activities, to reminisce on the  50 years of Guyana’s Independence.
As part of the event, Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs, listed the names of the members of the first and second parliament as he recognised their hard work for the past 50 years.
Additionally, five persons who served in the First and Second Parliaments and who attended the ceremony were honoured by the National Assembly.
Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Barton Scotland handed over the medals to the esteemed members.
Invitees were entertained with the recitation of poems, singing, several dance routines and other special items, which speak to Guyanese history and diversity.
Keon Heywood recited his special poem, “Song for my homeland”, a piece he wrote especially for Guyana’s Golden Jubilee celebration.
In attendance were President David Granger, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Ministers of Government, Members of the Diplomatic Corps and heads of agencies and organisations of Guyana.
