National draughts tournament opens this weekend

The Guyana Draughts Association will host its Annual National Championship this weekend at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
The tournament will officially get underway on October 1 with ‘B’ players taking to the board. Defending champion, Anthony Yearwood will be looking to elevate his rankings. A win will secure his position into the ‘A’ level.
October 2 will see four of the top players from the ‘B’ class coming on the table to show their strategic plans when they compete with the big guns in the ‘A’ Level.

After winning both the 64 and 100 square categories last year and will be pressing to extend his dominance in the sport. However, rigorous competition can be expected from the likes of Floyd Cumberbatch, Guyana Draughts Association President, Jairam, Mark Brathwaite and Steve Bacchus, who narrowly missed out in last year’s event.
As the sport continues, on Saturday October 8, the Open International 100 square will be played at the same venue, where the best of the lot will be on show.
Registration begins at 09:00h and the action gets underway at 10:00h sharp.
Entrance fee is $300 per person. All the games would be played on a six round Swiss system. The first four places in each division will receive trophies.
President of the Association, Jairam is calling on more Youths to get involved in this Board Game as it builds the thinking power and leads one to positive approach in life.        Berbice Bridge Inc and Rubis Bel Air Gas Station are already on board with both companies providing six trophies each. Attorney-at-Law Gentle Elias has sponsored two trophies while defending champion, Pooranmall sponsored one.
