National Junior Men U-23 whipped 7-1 by Chile

The Guyana National Junior Men’s Hockey team opened their Junior Pan American Championships campaign on a bad note. The Guyanese went down to Chile 7 goals to 1 in Canada yesterday. The Guyanese defense proved to be their biggest weakness conceding in the 20th minute when Chile’s Franco Becerra fired his country ahead. The goal led to the opening of the flood gates with a double from Juan Ambroso in the 33rd and 44th minute. Nils Strabucchi also got into the act and unto the score sheets 2 minutes later. The under-23 men from the land of many waters were able to grab a consolation goal in the 58 minute from the stick of Aroydy Brandford. Hopes for a dramatic comeback were dashed in the next 5 minutes with a double from Chile’s Nicolas Renz in the 62nd and 63rd minute.
Chile’s Jose Hurtado closed of the scoring in the 67th minute to seal an emphatic victory for the men from the land of poets.Guyana continue their campaign on today (Saturday May 21) against Mexico at 15:00 hrs ahead of their meeting with second seed and host nation Canada on Monday at 17:30 hrs.
