National Library hosts week of celebrations

The National Library will be hosting its annual National Library Week from April 10-16.
Over the years the National Library has been the main source of literature in Guyana. Centralised in the country’s capital, it stands at a point easily accessible to the Georgetown populace.Library
Throughout the week activities will sensitise the public on areas of importance in Guyana.
The list of events are being held under the theme of “Transforming your communities with help at National Library.com”
Sunday (today) will be the advent of activities with a fitness walk beginning at 06:00 hours from National Library along Church Street north into Vlissengen Road up to Thomas Lands and conclude at the National Park.
This event is slated on the heels of World Health Day recently and wishes to emphasise to the public the significance of a healthy lifestyle. The public is also invited to visit the National Library’s collection of fitness books.
Monday is for the religious aspect of the Library Week with an interfaith service commencing at 08:45 hours. Religion has always been a centrepiece of Guyanese with the three main religious bodies: Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. Ideally, this service will include prayers from leaders of the three main denominations in Guyana.
Tuesday’s schedule extends to cover advocacy, by means of a ‘big read’ programme at 09:00 hours followed by an open poetry and symposium at the Bagotville Library. The event is slated for Guyanese poets and staff who will showcase their talent.
On Wednesday the public can expect a detailed tour of the National Library. This tour, commencing at 10:00 hours and finishing at 16:00 hours will include an in-depth look at the services provided by the National Library.
‘Ask a lawyer’ is set for Thursday. The National Library in collaboration with the Guyana Bar Association will sensitise the general public on troubling questions of the law that affect their daily lives.
Approaching the end of the week staff of the National Library will be appreciated with a breakfast service at 08:45 hours and move on to a surprise event later in the day.
The week of events will conclude with a story-telling marathon and book give-away ceremony at the Library.
The public is invited to celebrate National Library Week with stakeholders and staff of one of Guyana’s main research facilities.
