National Sports Policy set for implementation this year – Minister Ramson

The Government’s effort to strengthen the administration and development of sport in Guyana is expected to take another major step forward this year, with the long-anticipated National Sports Policy set to be implemented before the end of 2026.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr, recently told the media that the policy has reached an advanced stage and is now awaiting one final internal review at the Ministry before it is submitted to Cabinet for consideration.
Ramson said the draft of the policy has already been completed, with the assistant director of sport, Melissa Dow-Richardson, leading the final review process. He noted that the additional review is also intended to ensure that newer staff members at the Ministry are familiar with the document before it moves to Cabinet.
“We’ve finished our draft; we are doing one more internal review, which the Assistant Director of Sport, Melissa Dow-Richardson, has conduct of, also because I wanted to make sure everyone who is new at the Ministry is familiar with it as well before it gets to Cabinet, but once it gets up there, it’s not going to take a very long time for it to be reviewed,” Ramson said.

The Minister said the Government remains committed to having the policy laid and publicly presented this year.
The National Sports Policy is expected to provide a clear framework for the growth, management and development of sport across Guyana. It is also expected to support better planning, stronger governance and improved coordination among athletes, associations and other stakeholders.
The move forms part of the Government’s wider push to modernise the country’s sport sector and improve systems for national associations and athletes.
