National STEAM Fair finals commence

The finals of the 2018 national Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Fair commenced on Wednesday at the St Joseph High School under the theme, “Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics paving the way for a green and sustainable society.”
Exhibitors ranged from primary and secondary to tertiary students. At the event,

participants were allowed to visit the booths and interact with the presenters on the area of study, which they focused on in their project.
At the exhibition, winners from the regional STEAM fairs were given another opportunity to further promote their projects, which tackled new ways of improving the environment, nutrition and our livelihoods. The ideas also arose from issues that are faced by the students on a daily basis and as such, ways in which they can be resolved.
On such example is the use of an air compressor obtained from an old refrigerator to create a product to inflate flat tires, by students of the Wakenaam Secondary School. After recalling the days that they would be late to school and the use of

large sums of monies to purchase bicycle pumps, the students came up with this idea.
Some of the other concepts highlighted at the biennial event included the reduction of litter in the surroundings, the introduction of new structures to protect the sea defence, creating an air conditioning unit using household waste and the use of natural repellents as opposed to aerosol sprays which emit hazardous chemicals.
Others also focused on the importance of dieting and the ways local produce can be used in everyday preparation of meals.
These concepts were developed with the aim of aiding local development and utilized creativity, research, inquiry and problem-solving skills.
The fair this year focused on 24 categories including agricultural science, Mathematics, technology, social and behavioural computer science, physics,

chemistry and biology, and saw participants from a wide range of areas across Guyana.
Through the fair, persons were sensitised on the importance of science and new ways in which it can be applied to create new inventions.
There is hope that the fair will result in the development of science and the other subject areas to aid in the further development of the foundation for national and global energy management.
The exhibition continues at the St Joseph High School until Friday. (Rupdai Seenaraine)
