Nava Raatree – 9 lunar days

Dear Editor,
Nava Raatree, which is a nine-day festival, will be observed from Sunday, September 29 to Sunday, October 6. But according to our reckoning, this period is eight days and is causing some confusion. This publication seeks to explain the situation.
Hindu “fasts and festivals” are determined by the phases of the moon. While a solar (sun) day lasts for 24 hours, lunar (moon) days vary; some last more than 24 hours while others less than 24 hours. Also, a lunar day begins at any time of the day (or night).
On Monday, September 30, there will be two phases of the moon. September 30 is, therefore, reckoned as two lunar days. So, September 29 to October 6 are, in fact, nine lunar days.

Yours truly,
