Nephew who beat uncle to death during argument over plantains charged

Twenty-seven-year-old Melroy Moore of Phoenix, Leguan Island was on Tuesday arraigned for the murder of his uncle, Aubrey Jonas, whom he had beaten to death during a row over plantains.
The accused virtually appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam and was not required to plead to the indictment which stated that on July 7, 2021, at Phoenix, Leguan, Region Three, he murdered Aubrey Jonas. As such, he was remanded to prison and the case was adjourned to July 29, 2021.

It was reported that on the day in question, a niece of the now dead man saw the suspect entering his yard and cutting some plantains without permission.
The niece reportedly informed the man of the incident after he returned from the backdam.
In anger, the man reportedly picked up a cutlass and confronted the suspect. He reportedly told his nephew: “You touch the plantains and you gone see wah gon happen to you.”
This, however, led to a heated argument after which they went in separate directions. Based on Police reports, the suspect then armed himself with a knife and went to the Phoenix Koker where he took a seat.

As his uncle walked past him heading into the village, another argument broke out between them. The now dead man then reportedly armed himself with a cutlass and broadsided his nephew. In retaliation, the suspect went into his mother’s yard, armed himself with a piece of wood, and dealt his uncle several blows to his head.
After committing the act, the suspect was seen walking away from the scene, leaving the injured Jonas on the roadway. The injured man was subsequently picked up by his niece, who had recorded the incident, and taken to the Leguan Cottage Hospital, where he was admitted.
He succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. Meanwhile, acting on information received, the Police went to an abandoned house in the same area where they found the suspect, who was told of the allegation and arrested.
