New Canadian High Commissioner to take up post in January
Mark Berman, who worked as the Director General for Global Affairs Canada, will replace Lilian Chatterjee as Canada’s High Commissioner to Guyana and he is expected to arrive in Guyana in January 2021.
His Excellency Mark Berman will also function as Canada’s Representative to the Caribbean Community.
However, in the interim, Counsellor for Development Cooperation at the High Commission, Janine Cocker will function as Chargé D’affaires until the new High Commissioner takes up his position.
This was revealed on Monday during a courtesy call by outgoing High Commissioner Chatterjee on Prime Minister Mark Phillips.
During the meeting, Prime Minster Phillips expressed his gratitude to the High Commissioner for her dedication to Guyana throughout her tour of duty.
The Prime Minister said he was especially grateful for her commitment to democracy in Guyana and her unwavering support for the democratic process to be maintained during this year’s national elections.
On the other hand, the outgoing High Commissioner assured Prime Minister Phillips that Canada will continue to work to build and maintain its excellent relationship with Guyana.
“We spoke about all the various sectors where we have provided support in the past and are willing to work with the Prime Minister to do so in the future,” Chatterjee stated.
Her Excellency Chatterjee will depart for Barbados to serve as its new Canadian High Commissioner shortly.
