New champion to be crowned on Sunday

18th Diamond Mineral Water 60-Miler Road Race

The crème de la crème of Guyana’s cyclists will converge on Sunday for the 18th Diamond Mineral Water 60-mile Cycling road race.
This year the event will see a new champion being crowned as last year’s winner, Alonzo Greaves is currently serving a World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) two-year ban.

Jamual John will be gunning for the 18th Diamond Mineral Water 60-Miler Road Race title

Among the front runners for the title will be Jamual John whose rivalry with Geron Williams is sure to continue; this particular rivalry has afforded cycling enthusiasts thrilling entertainment, so far John has triumphed over the last couple of meets, more recently at last Saturday’s “Dash for Cash” where he executed a perfect bike-throw to edge Williams at the finish line.
Aside from John and Williams, other cyclists who can turn up on any given day to dangerous effect are Paul DeNobrega and Alanzo Ambrose who will surely be looking to topple the John, Williams’ monopoly that has been imposed of recent.
The race will pedal off at 07:30h from the Ocean View Hotel on the East Coast of Demerara, Rupert Craig Highway head up to Halfway Tree at Perseverance, Mahaicony and then head back to the point of origin for the finish.

Geron Williams will be looking to beat Jamual John this Sunday as their rivalry continues

With the senior category open for a new winner, Christopher Cornelius will be looking to defend his Junior title while Junior Niles will be looking for a repeat in the Veteran’s race. Hosea McAulay will be the man to beat in the mountain bike category having won last year’s edition.
The top six finishers in the senior category will cop prizes as will the top three juniors, veterans and mountain bikers.
Along the route of the race, eight sprint prizes will be up for grabs, Larry Wills brand manager of Diamond Mineral Water will be on hand to hand over the prizes on Sunday. (Michelangelo Jacobus)
