New route for 7th Annual Massy 10k road race

– Missigher throws out challenge to Forde

The hugely anticipated 7th annual Massy 10k road race organized by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will now begin at Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara.

Over the years, the race began at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Bank Demerara after which the athletes head south along the West Bank of Demerara Public Road then east across the Demerara Harbour Bridge and north along the East Bank of Demeraar Public Road to finish in front of the Massy Headquarters but President of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson has indicated that the schedule for the bridge does not facilitate the race along the regular route this year.

The race is expected to begin at 06:00H which clashes with the retraction of the bridge making it impossible to have the race along the traditional route.

Hutson stated that in the previous years, “The Demerara Harbour Bridge usually separates the boys from the men.”

This year the well-attended road race will begin at Diamond Public Road where athletes will proceed north along the East Bank Public Road to end at the usual finish line.

Five time winner of the event, Cleveland Forde has already indicated that he will be looking to better his time and defend his title as the top runner; however, Winston Missigher who has been in good form will be looking to dethrone the champion.

Forde, who is also in excellent shape for this race will be setting his sights on bettering the 33 minute mark is confident that he can run around 32 minutes while Missigher, who defeated Forde in the Gold Mile road race, will want to prove that his win over Forde was no fluke.

Apart from the usual prizes of trophies and hampers the top male and female runners will cart off with $75,000. Additionally, all the runners to cross the finish line located at the Massy headquarters at Ruimveldt will have their numbers entered into a draw for the chance to win a special prize of one laptop computer.

Hutson indicated that this prize is a way for the organizers to encourage participation and reward runners who show great fitness and wellbeing while helping to improve the sport. All athletes are advised that they are to assemble at the Massy headquarters prior to the race in order to be transported to the starting point.
