New state-of-the-art building for Wismar Police Station

A new, state-of-the-art facility will soon replace the former Wismar Police Station at Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice). The older structure was recently demolished and work is already moving apace on the new structure which is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The project which recently commenced is expected to be completed within a year.

Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent Hugh Winter in an invited comment commended the move as a step in the right direction as he noted that the new facility is expected to have more facilities and accommodation in place, which he noted would be more suitable and comfortable. According to the Regional Commander, the former police station was not equipped with certain departments and offices but contained about 4 main offices. The Regional Commander said once completed, the building will be equipped with more modern amenities and additional offices.
“It will cater for new offices such as interview room and such like. Over there didn’t have such facilities…so this will have various offices. They never had an Inspector Officer office but they will get one now”, Winter noted. A contractor from Region Three is working along on the project. In the meantime, services for the Wismar location will be conducted at the neighbouring police building.
In 2018, a new Regional Police Headquarter was commissioned at the Mackenzie Police Station at a cost of $117 million. The IDB-funded project was executed as part of the then Ministry of Public Security’s Citizens’ Security Strengthening Programme (CSSP). IDB Representative Sophie Makonnen in her remarks at the commissioning ceremony had noted that such events are important as crime and violence have become increasingly recognised as a development issue by institutions such as the IDB, with increased requests for the Bank to become more involved in various aspects of citizens’ security.
