No light at the end of the tunnel

Dear Editor,
Helpful Not Helpful
Justice is conscience, not a personal conscience but the conscience of the whole of humanity. Those who clearly recognise the voice of their own conscience usually recognise also the voice of justice – Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008, Russian writer and 1970 Nobel Prize winner). These words should be the guiding compass of the GECOM Chair, however, Madam Claudette Singh is neither conscious of the perils of the recount nor has she radiated any semblance of judicial conscience. Here is where the Chair has faltered badly:
* The Chief Justice ruled a month ago for a recount of Region Four, where the improper declaration was made by Mr Mingo, yet there is a recount for all 10 regions.
* Public viewing via live streaming would instil confidence in the recount process; the Chair has flip-flopped on this issue.
* The Chair has not requested Mr Lowenfield to produce Statements of Poll for Region Four which has been the central issue of the present catastrophe.
* Far from the 15-day requirement for the declaration of results, the wheelchair approach of Chairwoman Singh leaves people wandering about her honesty as Guyana enters 65 days without a result.
* How can there be an accurate recount when the same personnel are present? The core players responsible for the fraudulent speed reading of the amended Region Four SoPs are still ominously present, except for Mingo. It is insanity to expect the same GECOM staff that committed major acts of fraud in the tabulation to morph from Saul the bandit into Paul the Apostle!
* Why do the Statements of Recount have to be in sole possession of the Chief Elections Officer in order for him to make copies? This is the same individual who unlawfully refused to make public the copies of the March 2 elections.
* The PPP proposed that all members of GECOM staff who were involved in the controversial activities, allegations of fraud and legal proceedings in the High Court after Elections Day be removed from active participation in the recount process. Justice Singh declared that there was no evidence before the Elections Commission to support the basis of the motion.
* By far, the worst judgment of Claudette Singh is her refusal to nullify the SoP for Region Four; giving rise to the conclusion that should the recount be thwarted, the results of Region Four will stand.
For many, there is no comfort and reliance in the recount, and whether you are in coach or first class, the structure of this process is horribly questionable and poorly designed by a Chair functioning with a double-digit IQ with a 6-figure monthly paycheck.

Sincerely,
Leyland Chitlall
