Education Minister Priya Manickchad, via a social media post, related that the students of the North Ruimveldt Multilateral School, which was destroyed by fire on Saturday, prefer to sit the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations in the school’s auditorium.
The statement came following a meeting with parents, teachers and students on Monday morning.
“The students prefer to sit their exams in the auditorium of the school and once this is safe and electricity can be connected there, this is what we will do. If not, we shall move the exam to a neutral location like CPCE (Cyril Potter College of Education) or UG (University of Guyana). The students will also let us know if they have any other needs which we can meet. We left them with phone numbers on which they can get us,” the post read.
The Minister further related that on Sunday morning she met with the Head Teacher and Teachers at the school to hear what they need and what level of support the Ministry can offer.
Some 65 CSEC students will have to be relocated after a massive fire on Saturday completely destroyed the teaching block of the school located on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown. The blaze which started at about 13:00h destroyed the school’s main building which housed all classrooms.
Manickchand said the loss of the A-List school is heartrending since only recently, a smart classroom that cost millions was commissioned there. She, nevertheless, pledged that the Government will rebuild the school which housed 512 students and 39 teachers.
