Editor, it is gross disrespect in our view, that after nine months of officially starting our duties within the health system, we are yet to be paid our salaries.
Editor, for some three years, we operated and studied as student nurses, eager to be qualified in our field. For three years, we endured that heart-wrenching sum of $15,000 per month. Now that we have completed our studies and eagerly await our due salaries we have been working for, for nine months, some for six months and have not received a cent. This is disgraceful and goes against the claims of development and a “good life for all”. Editor, bills are piling up and so is our debt as many of us have been asking our families for assistance and borrowing from friends.
It has been three months now, since we’ve been hearing that these payments would be made, but still nothing except excuses. This type of behaviour is not encouraging to attract young, bright people to this profession and it is certainly not encouraging for existing nurses. We call on the Health Minister Volda Lawrence and President David Granger to ensure the smooth functioning of this vital State-sponsored service by ensuring your staffers the right to provide for ourselves and families. We would surely hate to exercise measures recently taken by the nation’s teachers.
