NWD miner charged for stealing, discharging firearm

Twenty-four-year-old Basil Gonsalves of Red Hill Village, North West District (NWD), was granted bail on Thursday for the offences of larceny and discharging a loaded firearm, which reportedly occurred on May 8, 2026, at Koriabo Landing, NWD, Region One (Barima-Waini).
Police stated that on the day in question, a 31-year-old miner of Chinese Landing, NWD, was attempting to part a fight between two other men when his licensed .32 Taurus pistol, along with three matching rounds of ammunition, was allegedly taken from a holster on his waist.
One of the men, later identified as Gonsalves, reportedly collected the firearm and ammunition, and while leaving the scene, he discharged three rounds into the air.
The matter was reported, and Gonsalves was arrested, with the firearm subsequently recovered during searches conducted at Koriabo Landing, Barima.
Meanwhile, he made a virtual appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were read to him. He pleaded not guilty to both offences and was granted $200,000 for stealing the firearm and ammunition and $150,000 for discharging the firearm in public.
He will return to court on June 3, 2026.
