NWD miner charged, remanded for murder of EBD man

Just days after Police arrested a man accused of murdering another man at Balamani Backdam, Cuyuni River in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), that man has been charged with the capital offence.
The accused, 33-year-old Ovid Williams of Moruca Village, North West District (NWD), was arraigned before Bartica Magistrate Crystal Lambert for the murder of Brian Melville, 42, a miner of Lot 105 Second St, Craig Village, East Bank Demerara.

Charged: Ovid Williams

Williams was not required to plead to the indictable charge, and was remanded to prison until February 28, 2022.
Based on reports received, on the day in question, Melville had finished working for the day, and was standing at the entrance of his camp when the suspect ran up to him and dealt him three chops to his neck, shoulder, and hand, before making good his escape into the bushes while
Melville fell to the ground and became motionless.
Williams was arrested on the Puruni Trail the following day with what appeared to be the murder weapon – a cutlass – in his possession.
A post mortem examination has been conducted on Melville’s body, and the Police say they are still investigating the matter.
