The 38th Annual Phagwah Parade in Richmond Hill, New York, drew participation from city officials, members of the Guyanese diaspora and thousands of celebrants marking the Hindu festival of Phagwah on Sunday. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani attended the event and highlighted the cultural contribution of Indo-Guyanese and Indo-Caribbean communities to the city.

“It was a joy to return to Richmond Hill to celebrate Phagwah alongside the Indo-Guyanese and Indo-Caribbean communities who make this city so vibrant,” he said, noting that the parade signaled the city’s readiness to welcome spring. Phagwah, also known as Holi, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of spring. The event is traditionally marked by the throwing of coloured powders, music and cultural performances. Also participating in the parade were Pauline Sukhai, Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development; Michael E. Brotherson, Guyana’s Consul General in New York; and Fazal Yussuff along with staff of the Consulate General of Guyana in New York.
