Twenty-four-year-old Odessa Grogan who stands five feet, six inches tall and weighs 108 pounds will represent Guyana at the Miss Caribbean Carnival Queens Pageant slated for St Kitts and Nevis on Saturday, December 17.
The pageant is a celebration of rich Caribbean carnival culture and as such, Guyana’s Mashramani experience will be the focus point of her showcase, with a worldwind of creativity, colours, fun and festivities. The Accounts Clerk is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business Management, having completed her diploma in that field at the University of Guyana.
The talented beauty ambassador recently participated in her first pageant, the Miss Guyana Universe which was won by Soyini Fraser. Grogan likes Indian, Latin and modern dances as well as some acting and disc juggling.
Affectionately called “Spice Girl” – a name she got after being teased as a child due to having a similar hairstyle to “Scary Spice” from the Spice Girls – she is eager to represent Guyana on the international stage.
She is the youngest of seven children and was first runner-up in the Colefacts Student Designing Competition. She is also a part of the Civil Defence Commission Volunteer Corps, which was developed to support the functioning initiatives of the Centres for Disease Control (CDC); the country’s national disaster organisation, particularly at the community level.
Much of the focus of the CDC VC is on disaster risk management as it relates to children. Community service is extremely important to eight 8 when she first became involved with healthcare philanthropy.
Since then, it has been a personal passion of hers. Among other causes, she routinely undertakes feeding programmes with friends and colleagues for vagrants in the various area of Georgetown.
She has also focused a lot on orphanages as well by personally organising the donation of clothing, and personal and school supplies. The orphanage project has taken place every Christmas since 2009.
