“One Guyana” National Futsal Championship: California Square, Bent Street, Stabroek Ballers into quarter-finals
Over the weekend, the Kashif and Shanghai group’s “One Guyana” National Futsal Championship Round of 16 matches commenced at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, but not before the final group stage matches took place on Saturday night. The Round of 16 then kicked off on Sunday, May 7, 2023.
On Saturday, in the opening match of the night, NA United devastated Thomas Lands with a 2-1 victory. Goals came from NA United’s Justin Williams and Allista Drakes, who scored one goal each. Kevin Gordon scored the consolation goal for Thomas Lands.
Ballers Empire thumped California Square in the second match to win 4-1, with sensational strikes from Solomon Austin in the eighth minute followed by a double from Stephon Jupiter in the eighth and 13th and a Donte Mc Aulay goal in the 22nd. Mario Eastman was the lone goalscorer for California Square in the 29th minute.
The tertiary match of the night saw a demonstration of class from Road Warriors, who emerged victorious against Kitty Spanish 4-1. Sakeel Cadogan’s classy goal in the 15th minute were among the goals for Road Warriors. Nilson Figuera was the lone goalscorer for Kitty Spanish.
The opening match of the Round of 16 action on Sunday night saw Stabroek Ballers demolishing Albouystown 6-0 and becoming the first team to advance to the quarter-final round. A sensational performance saw Bevney Marks netting a hat-trick (2nd, 23rd and 29th) while Shamar Welch and Dorwin George did not miss out on the scoresheet with a double from George (38th and 39th) and a solitary goal by Welch (19th).
The next match saw an extraordinary performance by Bent Street, securing a quarter-final position with a 4-1 victory over Wismar All Stars. Devontea Tappin of Wismar All Stars scored the first goal in the fifth minute, but Bent Street kept their composure and netted the equaliser off the boots of Adrian Aaron, in the 10th. Sheldon Holder managed to score a double in the 16th and 36th minutes while Clive Nobrega put the ball in the net in the 37th, securing the game.
The final match of the night was a tense match, having supporters on their feet when California Square opposed Leopold Street. The 2-1 affair went the way of California Square, earning them a quarter-final berth. California Square’s Jerry Burnette netted the first goal to give them an advantage in the 26th minute, but Leopold Street’s D Stewart equalised the game 10 minutes later. T Blaize locked in the victory for California Square with a goal in the 40th minute.
The Kashif and Shanghai organised “One Guyana” National Futsal tournament will continue this evening (Tuesday, May 9) with the remainder of the Round of 16 games. The teams are vying for a $1 million grand prize.
