Ongoing feud leaves 4 in Police custody

…1 nursing head injury, brother broadsided with wood

A man is now nursing head injuries while his brother and two others sustained minor injuries following a brawl at Wales, West Bank Demerara (WBD) on Wednesday.

Injured: Avinash Persaud, who is currently nursing wounds to his eye, face and head after he and his brother were attacked by his former colleague and an accomplice

Avinash Persaud, who is hospitalised as a result of the injuries he received, and his brother were reportedly standing in front of their yard at Wales when they were approached by two other men.
A verbal confrontation erupted followed by an altercation. The incident was captured on Close Circuit Television (CCTV) security cameras on a neighbour’s house.
It is alleged that Persaud was employed with one of the two suspects but after he left the job, they continued to verbally taunt and insult each other.
However, on Wednesday afternoon, the matter worsened after the two men reportedly approached the brothers and began to physically assault them.
One of the two men, according to the recording, picked up a large piece of wood from the roadway and dealt several blows to Persaud’s body.
A relative of the two brothers stated that the men were defending themselves and that it was Persaud’s father who summoned the Police.
However, Persaud and his brother were arrested along with the two suspects as the Police launched an investigation.
“They were just defending themselves; they were already beaten up by those two, and then the Police locked them up as well. They didn’t start anything; they didn’t throw the first punch or such. This is not fair,” she lamented.
Police Commander of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), Assistant Police Commissioner Simon McBean confirmed that the fight was as a result of an ‘old grievance’ between Persaud and one of the suspects.
He noted that the file is presently being completed and legal advice will be sought on the way forward.
