Open Water Meet gets huge endorsement from Minister Norton

– swimmers commence race Sunday

Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Sport, Dr George Norton recently endorsed the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Open Water Meet set to whirl off this Sunday, November 25 at the Lake Mainstay Resort.
Wednesday’s meeting, held at Minister Norton’s Main and Quamina Streets office, saw President of the GASA Ivan Persaud and Vice President of the South American Confederation of Swimming Jorge Delgado, paying a visit to the Minister.
The debriefing was based on the upcoming grand competition, which will host some 300 swimmers from across Guyana. Minister Norton signalled his support for the event which is seen as the practical aspect of a Coach’s Swimming Clinic, which kicked off on Wednesday evening.
According to Persaud, Sunday’s meet will also be used as a test event to

determine Guyana’s preparedness to host international competitions. Regarding the meet, Minister Norton said: “I believe that Guyana will make a strong competitor for open water swimming, so the GASA will have my full support in this initiative.”
“I am very pleased that GASA is putting so much effort into producing Olympic-ready swimmers. Their dedication has not gone unnoticed,” said the Minister, who further congratulated Persaud on the work that GASA has been doing thus far in the realm of swimming.
Meanwhile, Minister Norton has accepted an invitation to pull the trigger to officially declare open Sunday’s swim event.
