The Ontario Softball Cricket League (OSCL) held its Annual General Meeting on Sunday at the Agincourt Community Centre in Scarborough and president of the League Albert Ramcharran stated that OSCL may not participate in the annual Guyana Cup later this year.
In his message, the Canadian-based Guyanese pointed-out that lack of commitment from the players and financial difficulties are the two main factors that may result in the team not making it to Guyana in November.
“We don’t get the commitment from the players and the trip is very costly, so I don’t think we would able to make it again this year,” Ramcharran declared to the gathering.
In 2014, the OSCL did take part with limited success while Dant Cricket Club which is affiliated with the League, participated the following year. They too also failed to make an impression.
Guyana Cup 7 which will be run under the auspices of the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association is slated to be held in early November.
Notwithstanding that, Ramcharran is very optimistic though an OSCL’s side will be competing at home in the Toronto Cup 2 which will be played the very first weekend in August.
This whiteball competition will be hosted by the Ontario Masters Softball Cricket Clubs and teams are expected from Guyana, New York, Florida and plethora of teams from Canada for both the All-Stars and Masters Categories.
Meanwhile, at the meeting, Vice-President Terry Mathura retained his position unopposed while Bobby Ramlagan also returned as the Assistant Secretary/Treasurer. The other Canadian-based Guyanese executive holding on to his position unopposed was Ranjan Persaud as the Assistant Statistician and West-End Coordinator.
Veteran Sports Journalist and Canadian-based Guyanese Fredrick Halley is still the Secretary while Kim Sue is the Treasurer. Vish Jadunauth and Patrick Prashad are the Competition Coordinator and Statistician respectively.
Mathura, who managed the OSCL’s team in the Toronto Cup 1 inaugural tournament, also mentioned that is quite disappointing for not taking part in such a softball extravaganza but is still very hopeful things can be arranged to make the trip possible given the lengthy time remaining.
Since the formation of the League in 1996, a large number of Guyanese cricketers would have featured in various versions, 10, 15 and 20-overs.
Some of those names are; Sunil Dhaniram, Troy Gobin, Eon Katchay, Zaheer Haniff, Hemnarine Chattergoon, Damodar Daesrath, Krishna Arjune, Krishna Deosarran, Shiv Seeram, Rovendra Mandolall, Ejaz Mohammed, Troy Gonsalves, Trevon Garraway, Harrienarine Chattergoon, Shaun Deodonand and Riaz Kadir.
