Over 150 residents in Mahaicony, Berbice, and along the Linden/Soesdyke highway have been connected to electricity for the first time, following the completion of new distribution works by the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL), as part of the Government’s drive to expand access to electricity nationwide.

In New Providence, Mahaicony, GPL has constructed approximately 700 metres of new distribution network, providing first-time electricity access to 20 customers. On the west coast of Berbice, network expansion was done in villages Seven, Eight, and Nine (back lands) to cater to over 50 customers through the construction of approximately 4.8 kilometres (km) of new distribution network.
Meanwhile, in New Amsterdam, the company completed electrification works at High Dam and Angoys Avenue with approximately 1.4 km of new distribution network, bringing first-time access to over 60 customers in these communities.
Additionally, GPL has constructed and energised a new electricity network at Madewini, along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, bringing electricity to the community for the very first time. The 1.7-km network will serve approximately 20 households, ensuring residents can have reliable electricity.
Residents in these newly electrified areas have already begun applying for their connections.
These initiatives form part of the Government of Guyana’s broader programme to extend electricity access nationwide – empowering communities, improving quality of life, and bringing the power of progress to both coastal and rural regions.
