Over $1B in drugs unearthed at Upper Berbice River

A Joint Services’ operation involving the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force on Wednesday unearthed over a billion dollars’ worth of marijuana in an area along the Upper Berbice River. According to the Police, 30 pounds of cannabis seeds, and 10 acres with approximately 58,000 cannabis sativa plants ranging in height from three inches to 10 feet were discovered in this operation.
Reports are that ranks were acting on information received when they went to an area in the Upper Berbice River, where they destroyed the cannabis sativa plants, two makeshift camps, and a number of farming tools.

The estimated value of the cannabis sativa destroyed is $1,247,388,320 (approximately $1.3B), the Police have said.

In a separate bust following an intel-led operation in New Amsterdam, Berbice, Police found a shotgun, several rounds of ammunition, and 98 pounds of marijuana.
Police in a statement said that during the operation, ranks seized an unlicensed 12-guage shotgun; 125 twelve-gauge cartridges; 19 rounds of .32 ammunition; 49 rounds of Geco .30mm carbine ammunition; 41 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and $58,000; along with 98 pounds of marijuana.
Five adults and a 17-year-old teen have been arrested in this operation.
