Home News Over 2500 UG students to graduate virtually
A series of historic virtual graduation exercises that are expected to be held by the University of Guyana (UG) will commence next Friday, March 19, 2021, via Zoom. A total of 2500 graduands from 50 different disciplines will graduate from the university’s Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, and Tain, Berbice campuses.
Next Friday, those from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, and School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation will graduate.
The following day, March 20, 2021, students from the College of Medical Sciences and Faculty of Natural Sciences will graduate, followed by those from the Faculty of Social Sciences on March 26, 2021. On March 27, 2021, there will be a convocation ceremony for students from the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Education and Humanities, and the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education.
According to UG, those attending the event will be part of several historic events, including the first cohort of UG-trained PhDs from the Doctorate in Biodiversity programme. The tertiary institution stated that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of prospective graduands this year is set to break last year’s graduation record of 2133 by 367 or 17 per cent.
Owing to the need to conduct business in safe mode in prevailing COVID-19 conditions, graduands will participate through a virtual march of graduate portraits as well as through a live online interface.
A record number of attendees are expected at this year’s graduations since given the online nature of the event there will be no limit to the number of invitees a graduand may bring along. Graduands will join the proceedings via Zoom, while their friends and family can join via on Facebook @uniofguyana
The University has graduated upwards of 50,000 graduates in its 58-year existence.
Many of them have gone on to serve at the highest levels nationally and internationally. The annual graduation exercise is a highlight on UG’s calendar of institutional events since it provides not only an opportunity for celebrating the efforts of students, lecturers, families, and supporters but for stirring graduation speeches from valedictorians and high-profile keynote speakers.
This will be the 54th convocation for the UG’s Turkeyen Campus and the 19th for the Tain Campus.
