Palmyra Housing Scheme 35% complete, homes set for June delivery

The Palmyra Housing Scheme which caters to 110 young professional homes are currently under construction, with works approximately 35 per cent complete and three units already at about 50 per cent completion. This was according to Housing Minister, Collin Croal during a visit to the area on Saturday where he added that homes are expected to be completed by the end of June. He explained that the young professional homes are replicas of those being constructed in Georgetown and are being built at a cost of $19.5 million each.
He highlighted that all contractors involved in the project are from Berbice. Of the 110 houses, 50 Berbice-based contractors are engaged, creating employment for more than 450 persons who are working daily on the project. Croal expressed satisfaction with the pace of development and noted that additional persons have already expressed interest in this type of housing, with the Region Six Housing Office set to engage those individuals. During the visit, he also noted that the Government has reserved 1,100 house lots at Palmyra for the construction of homes as part of its nationwide housing programme. Additionally, 99 per cent of 100 three-bedroom houses in the area have already been completed.

Junior Engineer attached to the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) and serving as one of the project’s supervising engineers, Orlando Arno, explained that each unit measures approximately 1,700 square feet. The homes comprise one self-contained master bedroom, two additional bedrooms, two bathrooms, a general kitchen and living area, and a dedicated laundry space. He noted that the houses will be equipped with all necessary electrical and plumbing installations and will be move-in ready upon completion. The units will also feature Shovel-textured ceilings, tiled floors and an external painted finish. Arno added that contractors are working diligently to meet the deadline, while the supervising team continues to ensure that construction standards are maintained so that beneficiaries receive quality homes.
