A special group consisting of several Members of Parliament (MPs) that are attached to the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Social Services will be visiting the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, on the East Coast of Demerara today to examine operational procedures there.
During the site visit, according to a Parliament officer, MPs will be given the opportunity to assess how members of the public access emergency health care and to observe the conditions under which patients are cared for at that facility.
Only recently, it was reported that in excess of 200 types of drugs were short at various medical institutions countrywide due to what was described as “several gaps in the system.”
Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence had ordered a stock count and was informed that 287 types of drugs/medicines were out of stock.
As such, an investigation was launched to ascertain whether anyone needed to be sanctioned, if at all.
The parliamentary Opposition has criticised the Administration for its mismanagement of the country’s health care system, which they said was currently at its worst.
Members of the same parliamentary committee visited the New Amsterdam Hospital in February and discovered there were drug shortages there.
The Parliamentary Committee on Social Services exercises the responsibility to examine all policies and administration for each sector, to determine whether the execution of Government policy is in agreement with the principles of good governance, and in the best interest of the nation.
