Williams was discovered on June 8 at approximately 13:55h by residents with a black plastic bag over his head – which was submerged in the canal. The body was clad in a burgundy t-shirt, long white track pants, and a pair of black socks.
In an interview with Guyana Times, one of the man’s relatives stated that he recently returned to Guyana after living in Venezuela for over 20 years. She said that on June 6, Williams left home to go to work, but never returned.
However, after he did not return home on Sunday, relatives launched a search and visited a few places he frequented, but to no avail. According to the relative, on June 8 when they heard that a body was retrieved from the canal, they had no idea that it was him until Sunday when Police arrived at their home with a photograph of him.
A Post-Mortem Examination (PME) done by Government Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh revealed that Williams died due to blunt trauma to the head.
When contacted, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) Police Commander, Assistant Police Commissioner Simon McBean stated that investigations were continuing.
