A 23-year-old unemployed man of New Amsterdam, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), is now in Police custody after he was found with 30.8 kilograms of ganja on Saturday afternoon.
At the time, the suspect was a passenger in a taxi that was stopped during a roadblock at about 12:15h at Weldaad, West Coast Berbice (WCB).
It was reported that after the taxi – a white Toyota 212 motor car with registration number HC 2702 – was stopped, Police conducted a search on the lone passenger.
While searching his bags, 15 compressed parcels wrapped with clear plastic were found. The parcels contained a number of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The passenger was told of the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and was arrested and cautioned.
He also admitted possession of the cannabis which was weighed in his presence and it amounted to 30,844 grams (30.84 kg). Thereafter, the cannabis was sealed and lodged.
The suspect was then placed into Police custody as investigations continue. (G9)
