Pedal cyclist dies 1 week after Mandela Avenue accident

The pedal cyclist who was struck down by a senior rank of the Guyana Defence Force on Mandela Avenue and Arapaima Street, Georgetown, more than a week ago, has succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Based on information received, 71-year-old Joseph Richards of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, took his last breath on Tuesday morning at about 04:00h without regaining consciousness.
It was reported that two Saturdays ago, at about 22:15, a motor car driven by the GDF rank was heading along Mandela Avenue and in the vicinity of Arapaima Street, Richard attempted to ride across the road, thus causing a collision.
As a result, Richards fell onto the roadway and sustained severe head and bodily injuries.
He was picked up in an unconscious state by the GDF rank and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted in a critical condition.
On Tuesday last, the Public Relations Department of the Guyana Police Force had confirmed that the injured man remained a patient at the medical facility in an unresponsive state. With his demise, the police are expected to institute charges against the GDF rank.
Richards’ body is presently at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
