Pedal cyclist dies, 2 injured in ECD accidents

A pedal cyclist is now dead after he was struck down by a motor car on the Melanie Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Tuesday evening.
Dead is Wayne James, 53, a grass cutter, of Cinema Road, Melanie.
According to Police, around 18:50h, the car, PMM 8751, driven by a 22-year-old resident of Block 20 Haslington, ECD, struck James.
The driver of the motor car told Police that he was proceeding east along the northern side of Melanie Public Road when he saw the pedal cyclist proceeding east along the southern side.
He claimed that James suddenly swerved north across the road and into the path of his vehicle. The driver claimed that he applied brakes, but the right-front of his vehicle hit the man.
As a result, the pedal cyclist fell to the roadway and sustained injuries to his head and his body. He was picked up by the driver in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination (PME). Police have since conducted a breathalyser test on the driver. No trace of alcohol was detected.
Also, on Tuesday, on the ECD, two motorcyclists were injured around 18:30h along the Triumph Railway Embankment.
Guyana Times was told that motorcycle CJ 4694, owned and ridden by Dindial Rampersaud, 43, of Agriculture Road, ECD, and motorcycle CG 9857, owned and ridden by Ryan Pire, 19, of Ogle Street Beterverwagting, ECD, were involved in the accident.
According to an eyewitness, motorcycle CJ 4694 was proceeding east along the northern side of Triumph Railway Embankment while a motor car was proceeding west along the southern side of the same road when the vehicle suddenly turned north across the road towards Agriculture Road.
Reports are the motorcyclist swerved south to avoid a collision with the motor car, but instead collided with motorcycle CG 9857, which was proceeding west along the southern side of the same road.
As a result of the collision, both motorcyclists fell to the roadway and sustained injuries to their heads and their bodies.
They were picked up by public-spirited citizens in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where they were admitted. Their conditions are listed as serious.
Meanwhile, the driver of the motor car was arrested, and a breathalyser test was conducted on him. No alcohol was found on his breath.
