Pedal cyclist dies after being struck by speeding car

A pedal cyclist has become the latest road fatality after he was struck down while riding along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Wednesday evening.
The dead man has been identified as 53-year-old Andray Simmons of Lot 94 Parker Street, Providence.
Based on information received, the accident occurred around 18:00h and involved a motor car bearing registration number PVV 1380, driven by a 30-year-old resident of Belle West Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
Guyana Times understands that the car was proceeding north along the roadway at a fast pace and while in the vicinity of the National Stadium, the driver claimed that the pedal cyclist rode across the road from West to East and ended up in his path.
He reportedly applied brakes, but hit Simmons, who was thrown into the air before ending up on the front windscreen of the motor car and then falling to the roadway.
The injured cyclist was picked up and taken to the Diamond hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the motor car found that there was no trace of alcohol in his system. He was taken into Police custody and was assisting with the investigations.
This is the second fatal accident in two days – on Tuesday, 18-year-old Elijah Bollers was struck down by a motor car at Delph Avenue, Campbellville, Georgetown.
