The Corentyne Highway, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) claimed the life of yet another pedal cyclist on Sunday.
Dead is 47-year-old Malchan Ramdanny, called “Rasta”, a labourer, of Number 69 Village, Corentyne.
Reports are that Ramdanny was proceeding north along the roadway in front of a motorcycle that was being ridden by a Police Constable.
According to information received, the Constable was behind a motor car which was travelling at a fast pace. The driver of the motor car reportedly passed the now dead man and suddenly made a turn in front of the Policeman.
This led to a collision between the now dead man and the Policeman. Both fell to the roadway and sustained injuries. They were picked up and taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where Ramdanny was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Police Constable, of 12 St John Street and Strand, New Amsterdam, was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital for further treatment. His condition was listed as serious.
Meanwhile, villagers say that every Sunday bikers would speed along the Corentyne Highway to Corriverton to hang out before returning to their homes.
The Policeman is part of the bike convoy Corriverton, when he is off duty. Police gave the registration plate of the bike as CJ 8224.
At the New Amsterdam Hospital on Sunday, several bikers had gathered, but all of them were silent when asked about the accident.
Police are continuing to investigate.
