Pedal cyclist killed after being hit by minibus

An 80-year-old pedal cyclist is now dead after he was struck down by a minibus on the Strathspey Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Wilfred Stephen of Lot 19 Vigilance North, ECD, was struck down by minibus BYY 9035, driven by a resident of Haslington, ECD, on Friday evening.

According to Police, the minibus was heading up the East Coast on the northern side of the road, while the pedal cyclist was also proceeding in the same direction.
However, while in the vicinity of the Strathspey Public Road, Stephen suddenly turned south across the road into the path of the oncoming minibus, causing the front portion of the minibus to collide with the pedal cyclist.
As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist fell onto the road’s surface and was injured. He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was admitted a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Stephen reportedly suffered a broken right leg and injuries to his head. Shortly after the incident, the driver was taken into custody and has been assisting Police with their investigations. Meanwhile, on Saturday, it was reported that the pensioner succumbed to his injuries at the said hospital later on Friday. Police said the man died at the hospital without regaining consciousness. The body is presently at the GPHC mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. (G9)
