Pedal cyclist killed by speeding minibus

…suspect on the run

Pedal cyclist Desmond Grandsoult of Lot 1710 Dedication Place, South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown was on Monday run over by a speeding minibus in the vicinity of the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) establishment on Vlissengen Road in Georgetown, and died while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to information reaching Guyana Times, the incident occurred at about 8:45h as minibus BTT 8476, driven by Jamal John, was proceeding south along Vlissengen Road allegedly at a very fast rate.
The 42-year-old pedal cyclist was proceeding in the same direction, and was attempting to cross from east to west when the minibus reportedly collided with the rear end of the bicycle, causing Grandsoult to be flung on to the roadway.
Given the speed at which the minibus was allegedly proceeding, the driver was unable to bring his vehicle to a halt, and it ran over the cyclist before ending up in the canal on the western side of the road.
Knocked unconscious and sustaining severe injuries in this double-collision, Grandsoult was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted a patient in the High Dependency Unit (HDU), but succumbed to his injuries later in the day.
Five passengers of the minibus also sustained minor injuries. They were taken to the hospital, but were treated and sent away.
This publication understands that the driver of the allegedly speeding vehicle fled the scene after the accident. Attempts were made to track him down, but even after checking several city hospitals, he could not be found.
Police were present at the scene a short while after the incident, and an investigation is in full swing.
