Pedestrian crushed by truck at Parika

A pedestrian has become the latest road fatality after he was struck down and killed by a truck at Parika Access Road, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) on Wednesday.
The now-deceased man has been identified as 43-year-old Sheik Bacchus, called “Babbo”, of Parika Salem, EBE.
Based on information received, the accident occurred about 13:30h on the day in question. Police stated that the pedestrian was walking along the roadway as the motor lorry bearing registration GYY 7021 was in the process of offloading sand.
After completely offloading the sand, the driver reportedly sped off. However, as the vehicle was passing the pedestrian, the left side of the truck came into contact with him.
As a result, the now dead man fell to the parapet and was run over by one of the rear wheels of the truck. The driver who was not aware of what had happened was stopped and informed of the accident after travelling some distance.
As the driver returned to the scene, the injured man was still lying on the roadway. He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver, who is also a resident of Parika, was taken into Police custody and is assisting with the investigation.
